About Invisalign

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign (clear aligners or invisible braces) is often used in both general and cosmetic dentistry to effectively correct various types of teeth conditions and complexities.

These aligners are nearly invisible, soft, comfortable, and removable. This means you can enjoy your favorite foods, participate in sports, and play musical instruments without interruption.

Detailed Invisalign treatment process with Dr Amanda Koh

The following is a step-by-step Invisalign patient journey to help you get familiarised and started on your Invisalign journey.

1st consultation

Begin your Invisalign experience with an initial consultation.

During the 1st consultation (20-30 minutes), I will evaluate your requirements and address any concerns you may have.

This involves conducting an oral examination, and taking an X-ray.

I will also capture your dental and facial profiles for diagnostic purposes.

Treatment plan

On the 2nd consultation, I will go over your diagnostic records with you, discussing your dental condition as well as the available treatment options, costs involved, and expected duration of treatment.

I will then offer a simulation to demonstrate the potential outcome of your smile after undergoing Invisalign treatment.

A customised ClinCheck® plan will be presented, showing you a comprehensive preview of how your teeth will progress at each stage throughout your Invisalign treatment.

Invisalign treatment begins

You will receive your personalized Invisalign aligners within 4-6 weeks, accompanied by guidance from me on how to use them correctly.

It is strongly suggested to replace your aligners every 10-14 days and wearing them for 20-22 hours every day.

Invisalign treatment completes

Upon completing your treatment, your attachments will be removed.

A thorough cleaning of your teeth will be done (either via Scaling and Polishing or Guided Biofilm Therapy) before conducting a final iTero scan to produce the retainers for post-treatment use.

Maintaining your smile

To help you preserve your newly acquired smile, you will have to wear your retainers nightly.

You will be advised on the most appropriate type of retainer based on your requirements and lifestyle, whether it's clear, Hawley, or Vivera retainers.

Modern and ethical dentistry done with your requirements in mind

When you receive treatment from me, I prioritise your immediate needs and requirements. This includes making sure that your treatment is as comfortable and seamless as possible.

I leverage digital dentistry to improve patient experiences. This strategy includes employing the iTero scanner for 3D teeth modeling, replacing conventional molds.

Additionally, digital X-ray systems emit reduced radiation and deliver instant results.

What dental conditions can Invisalign treat?

Overcrowding

Overcrowding occurs when there is not enough space in your jaw for your teeth to align properly.

This can lead to teeth clustering, overlapping, twisting, or being pushed forward or backward.

Overjet

An extreme overjet, commonly referred to as buck teeth, occurs when your upper front teeth protrude too far horizontally beyond your lower front teeth.

It is important to note that there is a difference between an overbite, where the upper teeth vertically overlap the lower teeth.

Underbite

An underbite occurs when the lower teeth and jaw extend forward, positioning them in front of the upper teeth.

In more severe instances, this misalignment can lead to issues with chewing food or difficulties in speech.

Crossbite

A crossbite refers to a situation where certain upper teeth are positioned behind the lower teeth.

This alignment issue can result in irregular tooth wear and potential chipping.

Open Bite

An open bite occurs when your upper and lower teeth fail to make contact when your mouth is closed.

This condition can impact your appearance and lead to speech difficulties such as developing a lisp.

Spacing

Spacing refers to the presence of gaps between two or more of your teeth.

This condition can contribute to speech challenges and make it easy for food to become lodged between teeth.

Advantages of Invisalign

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Discreet teeth straightening suitable for working adults

If you are a working adult or simply do not like the metallic appearance of braces, Invisalign is a good alternative.

Invisalign is an almost invisible aligner system that can help you adjust and align your teeth.

More comfortable and convenient than braces

Invisalign fits snugly onto your teeth and can be removed when you are having your meals.

Improves your overall oral hygiene

While many patients take up Invisalign treatment to improve their aesthetic appearance, Invisalign also has a functional purpose.

It can aid with improving dental health. One good example is correcting your bite alignment to improve your appearance while improving your bite.

Invisalign vs other aligner brands

While Invisalign and other aligner brands might serve the same purpose of straightening and aligning your teeth, there are some key differences that you should be aware of before you make a decision. The following is a quick comparison of some of the main clear aligner brands in the Singapore market.

Invisalign Clear Aligners - Dr Amanda Koh
Key Features of Invisalign

What is the difference between Invisalign and other clear aligner brands?

Uses ClinCheck® software to provide a 3D simulation of your treatment plan

Invisalign utilizes an exclusive software called ClinCheck®, which benefits from the data of 11 million patients.

This software employs an algorithm that enables your dentist to create a personalized treatment plan for you.

It also offers a comprehensive 3D visualization of your teeth, demonstrating the anticipated post-treatment appearance, all prior to commencement of treatment.

Treatment that is supervised by a licensed dentist or orthodontist

Throughout the entire Invisalign process, a licensed dentist or orthodontist closely oversees each step.

These dentists or orthodontists have the orthodontic expertise necessary to suggest appropriate treatment plans tailored to individual cases and tooth adjustments.

They are committed to keeping you informed about your treatment choices, guiding you on correct aligner usage, and addressing any questions or issues you may encounter throughout the process.

Made with SmartTrack® - a material that ensures comfort and treatment predictability

Your Invisalign aligners are made from SmartTrack®, a medical-grade polymer.

Align Technology spent 8 years developing this material and tested 260 different materials to ensure top-notch quality.

Thanks to this material, your aligners will fit securely and apply gentle, steady pressure to move your teeth, ensuring maximum comfort throughout your treatment.

Uses SmartForce to guide your teeth in precise movements

Thanks to SmartForce® attachments, it is now possible to achieve tooth movements like rotation, extrusions, and translations.

These subtle, nearly invisible, small tooth-colored shapes are affixed to your teeth. They collaborate with your aligners to accurately guide your teeth to their intended positions.

Invisalign queries answered

Looking to find out more about Invisalign treatment before proceeding to an Invisalign dentist or orthodontist? Here are some commonly asked questions that you might be looking for answers for.

Why is Invisalign so expensive?

Invisalign can appear expensive because of the following reasons:

  • Invisalign lab fees;
  • The experience and expertise of the dentist or orthodontist;
  • The complexity and severity of your current dental condition;
  • The duration needed to adjust and align your teeth to your desired appearance;
  • Whether the clinic is a dedicated Invisalign dental provider.

If you are looking for a reasonable and effective way of aligning your teeth, drop me a message at contact@dramandakoh.com or write to me via my contact page.

What is the difference between braces and Invisalign?

Braces and Invisalign are two popular orthodontic treatment options that aim to straighten teeth and improve oral health.

While both methods can achieve similar results, there are key differences between them:

Braces:

  1. Traditional metal or ceramic brackets: Braces use metal or ceramic brackets attached to the teeth, connected by wires and elastics.
  2. Visible: Braces are visible, making them more noticeable to others.
  3. More invasive: Braces require more invasive procedures, such as drilling and bonding to attach the brackets.
  4. More maintenance: Braces require more frequent adjustments and maintenance appointments.

Invisalign:

  1. Clear aligners: Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners that fit over the teeth.
  2. Less noticeable: Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, making them a more discreet option.
  3. Less invasive: Invisalign aligners are removable, reducing the need for invasive procedures.
  4. Easier maintenance: Invisalign aligners are easy to clean and maintain, with fewer appointments required.

Key differences:

  1. Appearance: Braces are more noticeable, while Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible.
  2. Invasiveness: Braces require more invasive procedures, while Invisalign aligners are removable.
  3. Maintenance: Braces require more frequent adjustments and maintenance, while Invisalign aligners are easier to maintain.

What age can I have Invisalign treatment?

The best part about Invisalign is that it caters to a wide age range.

There is no specific age limit for Invisalign treatment but it is generally recommended to proceed with Invisalign treatment only after seven years of age.

Children and Teens:

  1. Early orthodontic treatment: Invisalign can be used for children and teens to correct early signs of orthodontic problems, such as crowding or spacing issues.
  2. Preventive measures: Invisalign can help prevent more severe orthodontic issues from developing later in life.

Adults:

  1. Cosmetic concerns: Invisalign can help adults address cosmetic concerns, such as crooked teeth, gaps, or misaligned bites.
  2. Orthodontic issues: Invisalign can also treat orthodontic issues, such as tooth crowding, spacing, or bite problems, in adults.

Older Adults:

  1. Restorative dentistry: Invisalign can be used in conjunction with restorative dentistry procedures, such as dental implants or crowns, to improve the overall appearance of the smile.

Important considerations:

  1. Oral health: Invisalign treatment requires good oral health, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
  2. Dental work: Invisalign may not be suitable for individuals with significant dental work, such as dental implants or bridges.
How do I know whether I am suitable for Invisalign?

To determine if you’re a suitable candidate for Invisalign, there are some factors that you can use as an initial assessment:

  1. Severity of orthodontic issues: Invisalign can treat a range of orthodontic issues, including tooth crowding, spacing, or bite problems, but it is generally used to treat mild to moderate cases. Should you have severe complexity, braces might be a more suitable option for you.
  2. Good dental health: Invisalign requires good oral health, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. If you do not have optimal dental health, you might need to put in some work with your dentist before proceeding with treatment.
  3. Extensive dental work: Invisalign may not be suitable for individuals with significant dental work, such as dental implants or bridges.
  4. Age: While there is no specific age limit for Invisalign, it is essential to consult with a dentist or orthodontist to determine if Invisalign is suitable for you.
  5. Excellent oral habits: Invisalign requires good oral habits, such as regular brushing and flossing, to ensure optimal results.
  6. Teeth alignment: Invisalign can treat a range of tooth alignment issues, including crooked teeth, gaps, or misaligned bites.
  7. Gum health: Invisalign requires good gum health, as gum recession or gum disease can affect the success of your treatment.

Should you wish to seek professional assistance in assessing whether you are suitable for Invisalign treatment, you can reach out to me via contact@dramandakoh.com or through one of the channels on my contact page.

How can I find the best Invisalign dentist in Singapore?

There is no such thing as the best Invisalign dentist in Singapore.

In my personal opinion, the best dentist is one that you are 100% comfortable with to share your concerns as well as your treatment outcome expectations.

Should you wish to find an Invisalign dentist that is right for your needs, here are some key factors that can help kickstart your search:

  • Are they highly recommended by other patients?
  • Do they have online testimonials from other patients?
  • Are they a dedicated Invisalign dentist?
  • Are they an Invisalign accredited dentist?
How long will it take for me to straighten my teeth with Invisalign

Depending on your current dental condition, as well as the complexity of your case, it generally takes about 12 – 18 months to complete Invisalign treatment.

Do I need to remove or extract my teeth for Invisalign treatment?

You would not typically need to extract or remove your teeth if you are doing Invisalign treatment.

Invisalign aligners are designed to gently move your teeth into their proper position without the need for surgical procedures.

However, in some cases, Invisalign treatment may require the extraction of one or more teeth to achieve the desired alignment, or even orthodontic surgery to correct complex orthodontic issues, such as severe crowding or bite problems.
